The Mayor of Felixstowe, Cllr Darren Aitchison, raised the Red Ensign in the Town Hall Gardens at 10am today to mark Merchant Navy Day and recognise the vital contribution of the men and women who serve at sea.
Merchant Navy Day provides an opportunity to remember those who have served in the Merchant Navy, as well as to thank those currently working at sea and the families and shore-based workers who support them.
The Merchant Navy has a particularly important connection with Felixstowe, home to the UK’s busiest container port. The port and its maritime links play a central role in the town’s economy, supporting thousands of jobs and connecting Felixstowe with communities and businesses around the world.

“Here in Felixstowe, the contribution of the Merchant Navy is felt more deeply than most. The ships that berth here, the crews who sail them, and the global trade they support are central to our identity. By raising the Red Ensign today, we offer our thanks to those who serve at sea, those who support them on shore, and the families who shoulder the long absences and uncertainties that maritime life can bring.”
The Red Ensign also serves as a reminder of the courage and sacrifice of those who have lost their lives in service. Among the names on Felixstowe War Memorial are Second Officer Edwin Jeans and Able Seaman John Simmen, two Merchant Navy men who died during the Second World War.
By raising the Red Ensign, Felixstowe pays tribute to all those who have served and continue to serve at sea.
