Felixstowe Town Council Leads Torch Parade and Beacon Lighting to Mark VE Day 80

2025 marks the 80th Anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day—a momentous occasion that brought peace to Europe and marked the end of World War II. To honour this historic milestone, Felixstowe Town Council is proud to lead the community in a series of commemorative events, with a special focus on an evocative Torch Parade and Beacon Lighting on the evening of Thursday, 8 May.

Evening Torch Parade and Beacon Lighting – A Powerful Tribute

8.45pm, Undercliff Road West

The evening’s centrepiece, organised by Felixstowe Town Council in conjunction with Felixstowe Remembers, will be a symbolic Torch Parade starting from the Town Hall Gardens, making its way to the War Memorial on Undercliff Road West.

This moving procession will feature 112 flaming torches, each representing a life lost from Felixstowe during World War II. As the name of each individual is read aloud, their torch will be extinguished—creating a powerful, personal tribute to the fallen. Once the final torch is dimmed, the event will conclude with the lighting of a commemorative beacon, symbolising hope and unity.

The Mayor of Felixstowe, Cllr David Rowe, said:

As we commemorate the 80th Anniversary of VE Day, it is important that we remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice but also learn lessons from the past and work for peace in our world.

Morning War Memorial Service – A Time for Reflection

10.45am, Felixstowe War Memorial, Undercliff Road West

Earlier in the day, the public is invited to join a short Wreath Laying Service, organised in conjunction with the Felixstowe Branch of the Royal British Legion, honouring those who served and sacrificed during times of war.
