From September 20-23, a civic delegation journeyed from Felixstowe to Wesel, Germany, to commemorate a momentous 50 years of twinning between the two towns. The Mayor of Felixstowe, Cllr David Rowe, the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Corrine Franklin, and members of the Twinning Association joined together for a weekend of vibrant events to celebrate the enduring partnership.
Mayor Cllr David Rowe said:
“It was an honor and a privilege to explore Wesel, Felixstowe’s twin town, and immerse in its rich culture and warm community. Celebrating 50 years of town twinning is a joyous occasion, and I hope this weekend marks not only the continuation of a strong bond but also the beginning of many more fruitful years ahead.”
The highlight of the weekend was an official ceremony at Wesel Town Hall, where The Mayor of Felixstowe and Bürgermeister Ulrike Westkamp signed a charter commemorating this significant milestone. This historic moment was enhanced by a captivating sand painting depicting key moments in the twinning history, performed by artist Elena Handel.
In a further celebration of this landmark anniversary, Bürgermeister Westkamp unveiled a civic mural at the Citadel, dedicated to the shared journey over the past five decades, and five trees were planted to symbolize growth and continuity in the relationship. The delegation enjoyed a guided tour of the city, where they admired a painted mural, created by local artists, to embody the spirit of the partnership.
The civic delegation also had the pleasure of engaging with local authorities, including the Wesel Fire Service, who graciously hosted a celebratory BBQ, further strengthening the ties between the communities.
As the two towns look ahead, Felixstowe and Wesel remain committed to nurturing this invaluable friendship, celebrating our different cultures while eagerly embracing new opportunities for collaboration.
