Local resident, Stephen Squirrell, wins the 2017 Mayor’s Christmas Card Competition.
This year’s Mayor’s Christmas Card Competition was themed ‘Great Days by the Sea’ and from the launch on 9 October to the closing date on 10 November, Felixstowe Town Council received over 50 entries. The Mayor, Cllr Nick Barber and Mayoress, Mrs Judy Barber had a particularly difficult time choosing a winner from the diverse selection of high-quality photos. The winning image – a wintery sunset over a quintessentially Felixstowe scene – was taken by local resident Stephen Squirrell. Stephen captured the moment back in January, at the end of a cloudless day. Stephen and his wife, Maggie, had been enjoying a long walk to the Grove woodland and back down to the prom via Jacobs Ladder when they were treated to the most amazing sunset. On spotting the young family enjoying the view on the beach, Stephen couldn’t resist snapping them. He said “I don’t go anywhere without my camera and enjoy being published in the local papers and magazines. It was a big surprise to be chosen for the Felixstowe Mayor’s Christmas card and I am glad the Mayor and Mayoress liked the picture. I can’t wait to see it!”
The Mayor and Mayoress presented Mr Squirrell with a print of his winning photograph and a cheque for £50 on 30 November.
Blank versions of the card – suitable for a number of occasions – are also available to the general public from the Town Hall, for a small donation and the VisitFelixstowe beach hut. All proceeds go to the Mayor’s local charities, Level 2 Youth Project, FACTS and Felixstowe & Walton Football Club. The Town Hall is open from 8am-4pm Mon-Fri. Alternatively, please call 01394 282086.
