Felixstowe Town Council Decision on the Palace Cinema

Posted by Town Hall Staff 04 September 2025

At its meeting on 3 September 2025, Felixstowe Town Council considered the findings of an independent valuation and supporting reports in respect of the potential acquisition of the Palace Cinema.

After a full debate, Council resolved not to pursue acquisition of the property.

The decision followed careful consideration of the financial and operational implications, alongside the opportunities and risks associated with ownership. Councillors were clear that while the Palace Cinema is an important cultural landmark for Felixstowe, the costs and liabilities of acquisition would have placed substantial obligations on the Council and its taxpayers.

Cllr Corrine Franklin, Mayor of Felixstowe, said: “The Palace Cinema is a much-loved part of our town and we recognise its cultural and community value. Whilst the Council has decided that outright purchase is not viable at this time, we remain very supportive of its retention as a cinema. We will continue to monitor developments closely and would be open to discussions with prospective purchasers to explore ways in which the cinema might be safeguarded and enhanced for the benefit of our community.”

The Council wishes to thank all those who contributed to the process, including Harris Commercial, Iain Cochran Architects, and East Suffolk Council, for their support and input during the Council’s appraisal.
