Support Breast Cancer Awareness Month with Local Cafés and Bars

An official launch for Breast Cancer Awareness Month took place on 30 September 2024 at The Boardwalk Café Bar on Felixstowe Pier. The event was hosted by the Mayor of Felixstowe, Cllr David Rowe, alongside representatives from his chosen charities. They gathered to enjoy a coffee and celebrate the start of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which officially begins on 1 October.

This launch is part of a larger initiative supporting Breast Friends CIC, one of the Mayor’s chosen charities for the year 2024-25. Breast Friends CIC provides essential support to breast cancer patients from diagnosis, through treatment, surgery, and beyond.

In recognition of this important cause, several cafés and bars across Felixstowe and the surrounding area have pledged their support by donating a percentage of their profits or a fixed amount from each cup of coffee sold during October.

Participating venues include:

  • The Boardwalk on Felixstowe Pier
  • Lotty’s Tearoom on High Road East
  • Angel Inn in Walton
  • Wool Baa (also selling knitted items in support of Breast Friends) on Hamilton Road
  • Little Ice Cream Company on Undercliff Road West
  • Bar 129 on Undercliff Road West
  • The Greenhouse Café on Orwell Road

These businesses will display a pink poster in their windows to indicate their participation in the fundraising efforts.

The Mayor of Felixstowe, Cllr David Rowe, expressed his gratitude for the local support:

“It is a privilege to be working with Breast Friends CIC, who provide vital care and a sense of community to those diagnosed with breast cancer. I’m incredibly thankful to the Felixstowe businesses that have generously pledged their support. We welcome more to join! If you own or manage a café and would like to take part, please contact us at mayor@felixstowe.gov.uk.  Even a small donation can make a big difference in supporting those undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Let’s come together as a community to support this important cause.”

Caroline Sturman, Co-Founder and CEO of  Breast Friends CIC, said:

“At Breast Friends CIC, we’re on a mission all year round to raise awareness about breast cancer, but Breast Cancer Awareness Month is especially important. It’s a time when we can really focus on spreading the word about the signs and symptoms of the disease because early detection can make all the difference. We’re incredibly grateful to the fantastic businesses here in Felixstowe, like The Boardwalk Café Bar, who are supporting this initiative. Their generosity is helping us make a difference in the lives of people affected by breast cancer, and with every cup of coffee sold, they’re helping us to spread the kindness, support and community that’s at the heart of everything we do.”
