Felixstowe to Commemorate 80th Anniversary of VE Day with Torch Parade and Community Events
2025 marks the 80th Anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, a significant moment in history when peace was restored to Europe, bringing an end to the devastating conflict of World War II. On Thursday, 8 May 2025, Felixstowe Town Council invites residents, families, and visitors to join in observing this landmark anniversary with a morning service at the War Memorial, followed by a special evening Torch Parade.
VE Day 80 is not only a tribute to the courageous men and women who served and sacrificed but also a powerful reminder of the strength, unity, and resilience that have shaped our nation over the past eight decades.
War Memorial Service 10.45am
Join us for a short service of Remembrance at Felixstowe War Memorial, Undercliff Road West as we pay our respects to those lost to war.
Torch Parade and Beacon Lighting, 8.45pm
A symbolic Torch Parade will take place along Undercliff Road West, from the Town Hall Gardens to the War Memorial. The procession will feature 112 flaming torches, representing the life of a Felixstowe resident lost during World War II. Their names will be read out as a torch bearer walks forward and extinguishes their torch. The torch procession will conclude when all 112 torches have been extinguished. Following the parade, the evening will conclude with a beacon lighting.
Darren Aitchison, who is coordinating the torch procession for Felixstowe Remembers, is inviting local residents to participate as a torchbearer. If you would like to take part, please contact Darren at felixstoweremembers@gmail.com
Cllr David Rowe, Mayor of Felixstowe, commented: Cllr David Rowe, Mayor of Felixstowe, said: “As we commemorate the 80th Anniversary of VE Day, it is important that we remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice but also learn lessons from the past and work for peace in our world”.
