Felixstowe Town Council is aiming to bring festive cheer to the town with a free ice rink at Great Eastern Square in the run up to Christmas.
At a recent Council meeting, Members voted to provide the ice rink as a positive contribution towards the local community and to encourage more visitors and shoppers during the festive season. The synthetic rink is being sponsored by the East of England Cooperative who have also given permission for the square to be used.
The rink is also being supported by several District Councillors who have allocated part of their individual ‘enabling communities budget’ towards the venture.
Town Mayor, Cllr Doreen Savage, said:
“The ice rink will be a fantastic addition to the town centre and is sure to be hugely popular with children and adults of all ages. The Town Council is delighted to have the support of the East of England Coop and several District Councillors as it means we are able to let people use the rink for free.”
“It’s the first time we will have done anything like this in the town centre and if it proves to be as popular as we expect, hopefully it can become a regular event. I’m really looking forward to opening the rink as we have the Salvation Army Band coming to play a few numbers on the day as well.”
Other activities being planned alongside the rink include rides for smaller children and a stall serving hot food and drinks.
The Mayor will open the ice rink at midday on Saturday 19th December. Members of the public will be able to use the rink between midday to 8pm from the 19th until Wednesday 23rd December. On Sunday 20th December it will open from 10am-6pm.
