Landguard Fort is a Grade 1 Listed building owned by English Heritage and run by Landguard Fort Trust, a registered charity. It is the site of the last opposed invasion of England in 1667 and the present buildings date from 1745 with significant additions and alterations carried out in 1875. The site incorporates outlying gun batteries added at the end of the 19th century and during World War 2 and contains the UK’s only surviving defence headquarters dating from the cold war period of the 1950s.
Welcoming more than 27,000 visitors in 2019, Landguard Fort continues to develop as one of Felixstowe’s leading tourist attractions. Our aim is to enhance public knowledge of Landguard Fort’s long military history and as a building of great historical and educational interest , and to maintain and develop it as a unique venue for special events and activities for the local community.
The fort is owned by English Heritage but is maintained and operated almost entirely by volunteers.
There are plenty of things to do to keep the fort running smoothly and whether you fancy helping out for a few hours a week or a few days a week we would love to hear from you.
Whatever your age, gender, background or skills, you’ll get so much out of volunteering at Landguard Fort. Perhaps finding new ways of using existing skills. Or developing new ones. You can put in the hours that suit you to fit in with your life.
You’ll have the opportunity for work experience to add to your CV, health and safety training and certification,
first aid training, free uniform and personal protective equipment, travel expenses reimbursed.
You can get experience in trade skills, retail work, project management, historical research, tour guiding and much else besides as well as coming up with new ideas and working with others to get them done.
