Suffolk Day – 21st June 2021

Posted by Town Hall Staff 18 June 2021

Felixstowe Town Council will be raising the Suffolk Flag at 9am on Monday 21st June in the Town Hall gardens to celebrate Suffolk Day.

Due to the current restrictions, the fifth Suffolk Day, will not have the same feel as it did 2019 when the Town Council proudly launched the event in front of the Town Hall.

Held annually on 21 June – the longest day of the year – Suffolk Day is a real celebration of all things Suffolk.

BBC Radio Suffolk will be marking the day on air but with the present restrictions  many events have had to go virtually online or be cancelled.

Felixstowe Town Council will by flying the Suffolk flag in the Town Hall Gardens, but the customary ‘tea and cakes’ will have to be saved for another time.

If any residents would like to decorate their homes with flags or bunting, some promotional items can be downloaded from the Suffolk day website at https://www.suffolkday.co.uk/promotional-materials.

Use the hashtag  #suffolkday to tell us how you are celebrating Suffolk Day this year safely on social media.

Suffolk Remembers is still due to go ahead at Felixstowe seafront at the gardens beside the Spa Pavilion on Monday 21 June, 9pm-10pm.

The event is entirely outdoors and their team will be managing crowds during the evening. They ask anyone who wishes to be in the area to sign into the NHS Test and Trace app and maintain social distancing wherever you are. Masks should be worn when viewing the candle display, unless you are exempt.

Refreshments will be provided by East of England Co-op Funeral Services on the night. As well as the display and readings, Ipswich singer, Roma Manteiga-Nicholson, and well-known soprano Christina Johnston from Framlingham will be joining us, with music starting from 8.30pm.

There will also be an opportunity for the public to see the first statue for St Elizabeth Hospice’s 2022 Ipswich art trail, The Big Hoot. The owl is ‘A Hoot to Suffolk’ by Angie Ashford and will be there to acknowledge Suffolk Day.

All the Suffolk Remembers candles will remain on the seafront until 25 June 2021, so those unable to attend the memorial can still come to view their dedications and reflect throughout the week. They ask the public to keep social distance and remain vigilant when viewing the display, adhering to government guidance when viewing.

If you are not comfortable attending in person, a virtual version of the event will be on our Facebook and YouTube channels to view from 9pm on the same night as Suffolk Remembers.

The event itself is free to attend. Donation points will be present at the event, accepting cash and card payments.

They will be emailing all dedicators by Saturday 19 June with all the above details too.
